The 2020 edition of the Best Microalgae Awards focuses on the relevance of microalgae in our current pandemic-impacted world and in better preparing the world of tomorrow.

Applicants from all over the world will have the opportunity to apply for free to our non-profit award from Sep. 1ˢᵗ, 2020 through the extended deadline of Nov. 8th, 2020. The European Algae Industry Summit in Reykjavik, Iceland on Oct. 21ˢᵗ, 2020, has been indefinitely postponed.  Therefore, finalists and winners will be announced during the AlgaEurope 2020 summit, a virtual event on December 1-3, 2020. The exact date and time of the presentation is to be announced.

There are seven award categories this year, each including a winner and a runner-up:

The Game Changer

Harnessing the power of microalgae, ‘game changers’ send shock waves through the market, making it impossible to revert to business as usual…

The Upgrader

Flashy disruption isn’t the only game in town: most large changes happen in incremental steps instigated by ‘upgraders’

The Wild Card

Some promising innovations just don’t fit neatly into any category. Perhaps untested or quizzical, they nevertheless warrant our attention…

Inclusive Innovation

How microalgae can be leveraged to promote better health in undersupported populations?

Sustainability/CSR Initiative

We need pathways to building a better future, what’s yours?

In addition, two dedicated Social Spirulina awards are being sponsored this year, one in India (with a 200 kg in-kind donation of spirulina), and the other in West Africa (with 100 kg of spirulina). The purpose of these awards are to support an evidence-based approach or demonstrator case that leverages spirulina to improve health outcomes in underprivileged or disenfranchised populations.

The prize pool currently includes €5,000 in cash and even more in non-cash prizes. In order to maximize the positive impact of the Awards, cash prizes will only be awarded on a needs basis.
